Explore the emergence of the Republican Party in 1856...as a deeply divided country, increasingly polarized, north vs. south, abolitionists vs. supporters of slavery, moved toward the civil war. What were the emerging principles of the Party and how did they evolve as the country as the two parties sought to address the divisive differences between the many segments of the population. How did Lincoln and Grant stand by the outcome of the war even as the “lost cause “ version of the south began to undermine what the union fought for...undermining and delaying racial equality for 100 years.
