This class will explore the history regarding immigration to the US since its creation as a country, the desire to balance the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence with the realities and fears often created by significant waves of immigrants. For Jews, Blacks, Irish, Italians, Japanese, Chinese and others, the reception and assimilation process was a complex and often tortuous path. How do we reconcile this with President Reagan's vision of America as “a shining city” whose light “guides freedom loving people everywhere”?
