Racism in America: The Democracy We Created & the Struggle to fulfill the Vision


In 1776 the Founders articulated a new concept of government based upon the following principal: “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” From the start, we as a people have struggled to fulfill this vision and ensure that it was applicable to all. This class, will explore the history and experiences of Black people in America and the impact of Systemic Racism in denying them full access, from the beginning, to equal opportunities and treatment, thus fulfilling the promise of our Republic. Included in this course will be a session devoted to the complicated history of the relationship between the Jewish community and Afro Americans in America.

From the start we as a people struggled to fulfill this vision and ensure that it was applicable to all. This class will explore the roots of racism and white supremacy beginning with the European era of colonialism and how those concepts continue to endure to today, thus making our journey and efforts to establish a society where all people have equal opportunities regardless of color or heterogeneous ethnic backgrounds (i.e. Jews, Italians, Irish) so arduous and divisive.
